Why “No AI” Is Becoming a Feature

Why “No AI” Is Becoming a Feature

The technology industry is moving quickly toward an AI-everywhere future.

AI assistants are being added to operating systems, browsers, productivity apps, search engines and almost every type of software.

But an interesting countertrend is emerging.

Some products are choosing not to add AI.

LibreOffice is one example.

The open-source office suite has taken a deliberate position against putting generative AI into its default experience. Its reasoning is simple: users should have control over their data and over where AI processing happens.

That creates a bigger question for the software industry:

Should AI be added simply because it is possible?

AI should not always be the default

AI can be incredibly useful.

It can help people write, research, create, automate tasks and solve complex problems.

But usefulness does not mean every product needs an AI feature.

Sometimes the best feature is simplicity.

Sometimes the best privacy feature is keeping data on the user's device.

And sometimes users simply don't want another AI assistant watching, processing or interacting with their work.

Technology should give people choices.

Privacy is becoming part of product design

For years, privacy was often treated as a policy page.

That is changing.

Where data is processed, who can access it, whether it leaves the device, and which AI provider receives it are becoming important product decisions.

Users are starting to ask better questions:

Where does my data go?

Who processes it?

Can I control it?

Can I turn it off?

Can I use the product without giving up unnecessary information?

These questions will become even more important as AI becomes more deeply integrated into everyday software.

The Boad perspective

At Boad, we believe technology should make the digital world simpler without taking control away from the user.

AI is an important part of that future.

But AI should be useful, transparent and intentional.

The goal isn't to put AI into everything.

The goal is to build better digital experiences using the right technology for the right problem.

That means AI when it helps.

Privacy when it matters.

Control when users need it.

And simplicity throughout the experience.

The future of technology may not be about having AI everywhere.

It may be about giving people the freedom to decide where AI belongs.

That's the kind of technology ecosystem we're building at Boad.
