What is the Percentage Calculator?

The Percentage Calculator is a versatile, free online tool that solves all your percentage-related math problems instantly. Whether you need to find a simple percentage of a number, calculate percentage change (increase or decrease), or find out what percentage one number is of another, this tool does it all.

Everyday Uses for Percentage Calculations

Percentages are a fundamental part of daily life. You use them when calculating tips at a restaurant, figuring out sales tax, determining discounts during holiday shopping, or analyzing financial returns on an investment.

Understanding Percentage Change

Percentage change is widely used in business and finance to show the relative difference between an old value and a new value. For example, if a stock price goes from $50 to $60, the \"Change\" tab will instantly tell you that this is a 20% increase.

How to use this tool

  • Select the type of calculation you need from the three tabs: Basic (X% of Y), Change (Increase/Decrease), or Reverse (X is what % of Y).
  • Enter your values into the input fields.
  • The calculator updates the result in real-time as you type.

Frequently Asked Questions

To find the percentage of a number manually, divide the percentage by 100 to get a decimal, and then multiply that decimal by the number. For example, to find 20% of 50: (20/100) × 50 = 0.20 × 50 = 10.
To find the percentage change, subtract the original value from the new value. Then, divide the result by the absolute value of the original value, and multiply by 100. Our "Change" tab does this for you automatically.
The word "percent" comes from the Latin "per centum," which literally means "by the hundred." So, 50 percent means 50 out of 100, or one-half.
